How to connect ChatGPT to Google Sheets
There are two ways to work on Google Sheets with ChatGPT. With the Autosheet plugin, you give instructions in a ChatGPT conversation. With the GPT for Sheets add-on, you give instructions in a sidebar inside your spreadsheet.

From ChatGPT: the Autosheet plugin
Autosheet is the spreadsheet agent that powers GPT for Sheets. Add it to ChatGPT to work on your Google Sheets from the conversation: write and fix formulas, build charts and pivot tables, format and clean data, or run bulk tasks such as translation, categorization, and enrichment.
Step 1: Add Autosheet to ChatGPT
Open Autosheet in the ChatGPT plugin directory and follow the instructions to install it. You can also open Plugins in ChatGPT and search for Autosheet.
Step 2: Connect your Google account
Sign in with Google when prompted, either during installation or the first time you use Autosheet. Use the Google account that has edit access to the spreadsheet you want to work on.
Step 3: Start a new chat and send your first prompt
Ask ChatGPT to use Autosheet, include your Google Sheets URL, and describe the task. For example:

Inside Google Sheets: the GPT for Sheets add-on
The add-on puts the agent in a sidebar inside Google Sheets. It also provides bulk tools and GPT functions such as =GPT(), so you can choose how to run each task.
Step 1: Install the GPT for Sheets and Docs add-on

Step 2: Launch GPT for Sheets and Docs
In a Google spreadsheet, go to Extensions → GPT for Sheets and Docs → Open. The add-on opens in a sidebar with three tabs: Agent, Bulk tools, and GPT functions.
Step 3: Pick a ChatGPT model in the Agent
Select the Agent tab, then open the model switcher below the prompt box and choose a ChatGPT model. Model selection for the agent lives inside the Agent tab, not in a switcher at the top of the sidebar, and the list you see depends on what is enabled for your space in the dashboard.
The agent runs on the latest GPT-5 series models. The bulk tools and GPT functions have their own model switcher and accept a wider ChatGPT line-up, including the smaller fast models and a dedicated web search model. For the current list, see AI providers and models.

What's the difference between the Autosheet plugin and the GPT for Sheets add-on?
With the Autosheet plugin you give instructions in ChatGPT; with the GPT for Sheets add-on you work inside Google Sheets. Both use the same spreadsheet agent and your GPT for Work account. The add-on also has bulk tools and GPT functions. Installing Autosheet in ChatGPT does not install the Google Sheets add-on.
Do I need Developer mode?
No. Install Autosheet from the ChatGPT plugin directory. You do not need to create a custom connection or enter an MCP server URL.
Does the Autosheet plugin work with Excel?
