GPT for Work - 2025 September updates
September packs a punch. The main headline is the Agent — a brand-new chat UI for GPT for Sheets and GPT for Excel that lets you run bulk operations in your spreadsheets with a single prompt (think: "Calculate the revenue for each row" or "Fill out this table using the instructions in row 1"). The feature is currently being rolled out to users.
We've also added centralized model switcher controls for space owners and admins, introduced OpenAI GPT-4o Search Preview models without an API key, enabled URL context for Gemini models, and made web search more powerful.
Explore the key improvements and announcements below, and check out the release notes for the full details.
👨🏻💼 Agent — Chat with your spreadsheets

Meet the Agent, a new conversational experience that understands your spreadsheets and executes actions in bulk based on your prompts. You can do bulk content generation, bulk translation, bulk web search, bulk data preparation, and bulk data analysis — with just a few words, and without any configuration!

To get started, try the built-in examples in the Agent UI: Choose an example from the Try an example drop-down menu — the add-in will create a new sheet with sample data and fill in the appropriate Agent prompt — and click Send. And then simply sit back and watch the magic happen.

👩💼 Admin controls
Centralized model switcher management

Space owners and admins can now manage the model switcher for everyone:
- Set a default model.
- Choose which models appear and in what order.
- Control how new models are introduced.

🤖 New AI models in September 2025
- OpenAI GPT-4o Search Preview
(without API key)
A specialized model trained to understand and execute web search queries, offering fast performance and competitive cost per search query. - OpenAI GPT-4o mini Search Preview
(without API key)
A compact and cost-efficient version of GPT-4o Search Preview, optimized for speed and lower cost.

✨ Feature improvements
Gemini URL context

You can now use Gemini models with URL context. Include URLs in your prompt, and the model will fetch and use the content to inform its responses. The model primarily relies on recently indexed content for speed, but will perform a live fetch when needed.

Improved web search

Web search is now more powerful and focused in GPT for Sheets and GPT for Excel:
- Up to 20 domain filters in Sonar web search (previously 3).
- Removed unused recency (Sonar) and location (OpenAI) filters to simplify setup and improve reliability.

And in GPT for Sheets, you can now show sources used by OpenAI web search models, bringing more transparency to your search workflows.
