How to create an OpenAI API key
What is an API key and why do I need one?
An API key is a unique identifier that allows you to use the ChatGPT API as well as all the other OpenAI APIs. It is used by OpenAI to monitor your usage and bill you accordingly. The GPT for Sheets and Docs extension is built on OpenAI APIs and requires you to bring your own API key.

Step-by-step tutorial
- Step1: Create an account at https://platform.openai.com/signup
- Step2: Go to https://platform.openai.com/account/api-keys
- Step 3: Click Create new secret key
- Step 4: Check that your key is working by running a prompt in the playground.
If your free trial is expired, inactive, or simply not working, you will have to set up a paid account in the billing dashboard.
